Chapter 16
Zane
I'm pulling up to the location that Kesley sent me.
She walks out of the sky-high building wearing a cute business casual outfit and her book tote. As I pull up next to her, she cocks her head to the side and assesses me.
"Really?"
"What were you expecting me to show up in? A limo?" I ask.
She looks around at the people watching us.
"I mean, no, but...I'm in a skirt," her eyes go down to her feet. "And heels, Zane."
I unhook the extra helmet I bought for her, swing my leg over the bike, and walk up to her. She looks up at me through those dark lashes.
"I like you in heels," I tell her. "You should keep them on later too." I take her hair and push it behind her back, slipping the matching black helmet over her head and making sure it fits her properly.
"There, how does that feel?"
She says something from behind the mirrored visor and it's muffled. I hit the button that brings the visor up. "Say that again, little lion."
"I said, how am I supposed to breathe in this thing?"
"You don't need to breathe. You just need to be protected." I knock on the top of the helmet and she narrows her eyes at me.
Before she can say another smart remark, I hit the button and bring the visor down over her eyes. She jumps back. "Come on. We don't want to be late or we'll miss the view."
I put my helmet on and start up the bike. The purr from the engine startles more than a couple of people nearby. Our Bluetooth mics in our helmets connect and I can hear her breathing. "You coming or what?"
She pulls her tote to herself and stalks over to me.
"What about my things?" she asks, holding up the tote.
I pop open the back part that lifts up from under her seat. "Slide it in," I tell her.
"Fancy."
When she's settled behind me, I rev the engine. She slips her small hands around my waist loosely.
"You'll wanna hold on a little tighter than that, Kes."
"Oh really? You're not just trying to get me to press my chest into you?"
"Oh, I'm definitely trying to get you to press your chest into me. That's why I'm going to do this." I rev the engine again and look around before peeling away from the big building.
She gasps and holds on even tighter to me. "Told you."
I can feel her rolling her eyes behind me, even if I can't see her and I can't hold back the grin that crosses my face.
We ride in silence out of the city. The constant hum of the bike seems to relax her a bit. I can feel her breathing start to slow down.
We're on an open stretch of road that I've ridden through more times than I can count. The sun is going down and we're following it to the west of Houston. This is why polarized visors help. It's for the moments like this when the sun would be blinding us.
